Gonzaga, Cagayan to compete in ‘Most Outstanding Coastal Community 2022’

Cagayan, Philippines – The municipality of Gonzaga in Cagayan was chosen to compete in the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources’ Search for ‘Most Outstanding Coastal Community 2022’ at the National Level, according to Cagayan Provincial Information Office.

The said search which is under the ‘Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan’ or known as MMK program of BFAR aims to recognize coastal communities’ initiatives in utilizing sustainable management practices as well as to promote community engagement with stakeholders in the conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources.


In a report, Officer-In-Charge and BFAR Administrative and Finance Division Chief, Emma Ballad revealed that Gonzaga municipality satisfied the criteria required in the said search and was chosen to compete after winning the Most Outstanding Coastal Community at the regional level.

Among the criteria in the said search include the following: has a program or initiative and accomplishment in combating illegal fishing, observes the ecosystem approach to fisheries resource management, protects marine and fisheries area and implements the RA 9003 or Solid Waste Management Act in coastal areas and the protection and rehabilitation of mangrove areas.


Ballad further revealed that millions of pesos are at stake - P30 million for the grand winner, P18 million for the second place, and P10 million for the third place.


Meantime, the municipality hopes to win the said search and bring the prize money home to utilize for the improvement of the coastal areas in the municipality.
