Isabela, Philippines – As the summer season officially began, face-to-face classes for elementary and high school in Isabela are automatically cancelled once heat index hits 41°C.

The Isabela Provincial Information Office, on March 27, released Executive Order No. 06 signed by Governor Rodolfo Albano III which called for the instant suspension of classes in the province should the heat index reach or exceed 41°C.

The order cited that heat index reaching 41°C and above is under ‘danger’ category and that it brings the likelihood of heat-related illnesses such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

To protect teachers, students, and school personnel from said illnesses, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office recommended for the automatic suspension of classes policy. Thus, the order signed by the governor.

“Upon the issuance of a heat index warning or forecast by PAGASA indicating temperatures reaching or exceeding 41°C, all face-to-face classes in grade school and secondary, both public and private, within the province shall be automatically suspended,” the EO reads.

The Isabela PIO noted that the schools will be required to implement alternative learning delivery modes should classes be suspended to ensure the educational continuity while prioritizing the health and safety of the students and teachers.

Heat index reports in the province shall be announced by the Isabela PDRRMO.
