Grade 10 math wizard from Apayao is international olympiad medalist


Apayao, Philippines – A Grade 10 math wizard of Apayao Science High School edged thousands of student representatives from other countries to take home the silver medal in the final round of the Thailand International Mathematical Olympiad (TIMO) held in Pattaya City from March 31 to April 2, 2023.


The 16-year-old Emil Peterson Borromeo, in an interview, shared he was inspired by his parents - Jenny and Joeffrey Borromeo, and his brother Ean Patrick. His father is currently the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer of Apayao, while his mother is a staff of the Provincial General Services Office. The family resides in San Isidro Sur, Luna, Apayao.

Awards and Accomplishments


Emil’s recent achievement in TIMO 2022-2023 final round is not his first world medal. He snagged silver medals in TIMO 2021-2022 Heat Round for the Senior Secondary category, TIMO 2021-2022 Final Round, and TIMO 2022-2023 Heat Round.


He likewise won the silver medal in the Philippine IMO 2021-2022 Heat Round and earned merit in the competition’s final round.


During the Regional Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) Math Challenge 2018, he ranked third in both the individual and team categories. He was a qualifier in the National Science Quest: Math Quiz Bee Category, first place in the Regional Science and Technology Fair (RSTF): Likha - a Research Proposal Competition (Math Category), and a qualifier in the latter’s national contest.

TIMO 2022-2023


When faced with around 3,000 mathletes in TIMO 2022-2023, the yApayao math wizard confidently aced the questions with his thorough preparation - intensive self-review and answering mock exams with leisure time in between.


His experiences and exposure to other mathematical contests, with the support of the people of Apayao also fueled him to excel in the competition.


Proud parents and achiever


When Emil clinched the silver medal, Jeoffrey who accompanied his son all the way to Thailand, and his wife, including Ean Patrick, couldn’t be more proud of the mathlete.

For Emil, he is beyond grateful that all his sacrifices and determination paid off.


The silver medalist extended his gratitude to his family, friends, and relatives for their motivation and guidance throughout his TIMO journey.


“Also, [to] our Provincial Government of Apayao headed by Gov. Elias C. Bulut, Jr. and Cong. Leah Bulut-Begtang and the LGU Luna headed by Mayor Josephine M. Bangsil for their support, our SDO Apayao, Apayao Science High School headed by Sir Danilo L. Cudiamat, and to my coach Sir Daine Gamiao,” he added.


Recognition from SDO Apayao


During the first executive committee meeting of the Department of Education (DepEd) Apayao in Luna on April 4, Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Irene S. Angway and other education leaders congratulated Emil and provided him a cash incentive in recognition to his accomplishment.
