The world has experienced rapid changes through many inventions that made life easier and comfortable. Most inventors, through the years, started at a young age to learn and discover with their journey sourced out from curiosity and their knowledge of the power of sciences.
Recently, a 17-year-old Igorot inventor from Bangued, Abra became known by thousands of netizens through a Facebook post of ABS-CBN, having invented a powered light bulb using wireless electricity.
This young inventor is Jhentrix Castillo, an incoming grade 12 student of Abra High School (AHS). He is the son of Cherry Castillo, a meat vendor, and Jhonnel Castillo, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW). His interest in inventing things started at a very young age when he was 7 years old.
To light up the wireless bulb, he used the concept of Tesla coil. Tesla coil is the creation of American Inventor Nikola Tesla, who discovered high-voltage, low-current and high-frequency alternating-current electricity.
As an innovative young man, Castillo replicated the Tesla coil using junk or reusable materials like jars filled with saltwater and nails in order to create electricity and light up the bulb without using any electrical wires.
He also used a laptop charger to run the power supply into a transformer to convert 30 volts from 24 and a TV flyback driver circuit ready to emit high voltage to drive two recycled plastic containers that he used as capacitors.
“Nagawa ko po ito dahil yan ay wala pang nakagawa dito sa amin (sa Abra). Na-inspire ako dahil sa lolo ko, tito ko lalong lalo na kay Tesla. Gusto ko lang pong gawin para yung mga di pa basag na fluorescent bulb eh pwede pa tsaka environmental friendly po siya,” Castillo said in an interview with Guru Press.
The device is actually not his first invention. His first invention was a ‘solenoid engine’ a machine that runs using a battery or direct current. He also invented things like sugarcane squeezers, a scooter that runs using grass cutter and gas, a hydro generator electric bike, a device made up of steel plate that can make water into flammable gas and he also assembled a bulldozer from a pivot tractor.
As a message, he encouraged aspiring young inventors to do more to become an innovative inventor.
“Ang gusto ko lang naman po eh kung ano ang plano nila gawin nila, wag lang silang magstay sa plano, at wag lang madaliin tsaka wag na wag nilang kakalimutan si God na pasalamatan,” Castillo said.
DepEd Tayo AHS in a Facebook post mentioned that the young inventor also did it to honour his teacher, Mr. Joseph Garcia. The teacher was his inspiration; he helped sustain his skills and interest in this field even when no one believed he has potentials.
Unfortunately, his teacher died of chronic kidney failure.
