Grade-2 Twins from Tuguegarao win gold medals in Thailand Chess Championships


Tuguegarao, Cagayan – Twins from Tuguegarao City, Cagayan along with their fellow Filipino chess player won 13 golds in the Under-8 Rapid Team Category of the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held Saturday, November 05, in Bangkok, Thailand.


The chess wizards namely, Jury Joaquin Ferrer and Seigneur Juancho Ferrer, are both Grade 2 pupils of Tuguegarao North Central School (TNCS) and are members of Chess Kids Tuguegarao.


The chess players had been competing at different levels before securing the top spot at the Eastern Asian level.


On September 16 to 23, the twins joined the National Youth and Schools Chess Championship in Dapitan City, Zamboanga Del Norte where Juancho emerged as 3rd Runner Up while his twin ended as Top 10 under the 9-under of the Standard Game, says their school.

On October 24 to 27, the chess wizards also competed in the grand finals of the Philippine National Chess Championships (Children and Junior) in Malolos City, Bulacan. They were said to be the youngest participants in the event.


With the exemplary performance displayed by the twins and other players from the country in Thailand, they were able to bring home the highest number of gold medals in the competition.


According to TCNS, next to the Philippines’ spot is Mongolia with 9 points, followed by South Korea with 8 points, Singapore, and then Thailand.
