One of parents’ wishes is to see their child receive their college degree and march with them on stage with pride.

For a mom in Cagayan, she could hardly control her tears as her son graduated from the university. Usually, this display of emotion is associated with joy, but hers is different as it reflects pain.

The mom who went viral on Facebook attended the 75th Commencement Exercises of the University of Cagayan Valley (UCV) this June 15, 2023 for the graduation of her son, Sherwin Gumahong.

What tugged at everyone’s heartstrings was the view of this mom who instead of holding Sherwin’s hand as she accompanies him on stage, she was only with a picture frame bearing the graduate’s image.

Her son who completed Bachelor of Science in Criminology passed away before he could receive the diploma he worked hard to get the past years.

In a video posted online, the parent was seen trying to detain her tears and she even mustered a smile, but when the teary UCV President, Dr. Esther Susan N. Perez-Mari gave her a hug, it was when she lost it and shed a tear.

“Congratulations UCV School of Criminology Graduates (Part 1 - A to G). With deepest sympathies to the bereaved family of Mr. Sherwin Gumahung,” President Mari later posted on her Facebook account.
