Baguio City health expert warns public against fake medicines

Baguio City, Philippines - In time with the observance of this year’s National Consciousness Week Against Counterfeit Medicines (NCWACM), a health expert in Baguio City cautions the public against the purchase and use of fake medicines.”

A fake medicine or counterfeit medicine, according to Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center Pharmacist III Raymond Dagwasi, is one with the right ingredients but is given in the wrong quantity, resulting in incompatibilities.

Such medicines can cause unexpected side effects, allergic reactions, and worsening of medical conditions, which can lead to death.

Dagwasi, during the Kapihan sa Baguio Forum on Nov. 9, 2023, advised the public to be careful when purchasing medicines.

“You can examine the medicine itself, confirm its authenticity with regulatory authorities, or verify it online. Being vigilant is essential to be able to prevent serious health risks... Huwag maniwala sa mga good to be true deal or promos... Knowledge is your best medicine,” he said.

In addition, he also reminded the public to make sure that all names, including the brand name, are correct on the packaging and labeling.
