Updated: May 26, 2021

Tanudan, Kalinga― With problems on solid waste management, erosion and forest degradation, most places in the country indeed need activities that bring result to conserve the environment, but it is most often more needful to have people who know they are part of the solution.

This is what the Kalinga Special Education (KSPEd) Center have in mind in contributing to the bid to save the environment. Over 36 learners and teachers did a tree planting activity of 100 indigenous fruit tree seedlings and river clean-up drive at 4C’s Dalanao Eco farm in Barangay Mabaca, Tanudan.

The tree planting and river clean-up drive is yearly implemented through the KSPEd Center Outreach program with a theme, “Develop a forest, Develop a river.”

Strengthening environmental education

Thea Shivonne Baculi, Special Education Teacher II, shared that the program was first organized and implemented in 2017 with the goal to strengthen the environmental education and responsibility within the teachers and learners of the school.

“Kayat ko met nga ma-involve dagitoy other organizations ti school sunga inmaymaysa mi nga outreach program to strengthen environmental education iti KSPEd learners and teachers nga mang address iti issues and concerns iti environment, and nakipag-network kami met lang ti other government ken non-government organizations,” she expressed.

Unlike the previous years, Baculi mentioned that they opted to plant indigenous species of fruit trees like Buron and Assang to increase their number as indigenous fruit trees seem to be decreasing in number.

They hope to introduce these trees to as many areas in the province.

The group has also conducted a clean-up drive in the creeks and river of the Eco farm.

Those who participated in the tree planting and clean-up drive of river are the advisers and presidents of the school’s different organizations, Melanie Baterina and Keith Raver Gayamos of science math club, Irene Gaayon and Dritz Gaayon of Girls Scout of the Philippines (GSP), Genevieve Cabao-ig and Ashley Pangda of Yes-o, Concepcion Vallejo and GM Pengad of Boys Scout of the Philippines, and Marilyn Bawalan, Joliva Baculi, and Jesiah Gayamos of Supreme Pupil Government (SPG).
