How would you like Tilapia farmed up in Tinglayan mountains?

Writer: Christian MalnawaChristian Malnawa

Tinglayan, Kalinga – With the three-day fishpond validations, tilapia farming will soon commence. With this, 54 Tinglayan fisherfolk are possible beneficiaries for the fingerlings distribution and other services under the Special Area for Agricultural Development (SAAD) program of the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR).

The validation is being done to check if the fisherfolk have followed what was instructed to them during their orientation last August 19.

In order to start a Tilapia culture in ponds, there is a need to select a proper pond layout, do pond preparation, and learn its management, including record keeping.

Each beneficiary is expected to prepare a pond area ranging from 50 to 200 square meters (sqm), which has a stocking density of five (5) pieces of tilapia fingerlings per sqm.

Distribution of fingerlings and feeds will be done once their ponds are ready for stocking, depending on the results of the validation, according to Brenda Dona-al of OMAS-Tinglayan.

“After passing, we will then distribute the fingerlings followed by the feeds," Dona-al said.

The number of fingerlings to be given shall depend on the area of the beneficiaries’ constructed fish pond, while feeds to be provided will include fry mash, pre-starter, starter, grower, and finisher.

BFAR will also be granting harvesting nets and crates for the harvest seasons.

With said opportunity, Dona-al has high hopes that the beneficiaries have followed what was oriented to them, as they are the last ones to benefit from the assistance from BFAR.

"We also hope that your harvests would not just be for your own consumption, but that it would also provide you additional income. Sell what you've harvested...We hope that this program will make good impacts on your lives,” she added.

As recalled, 12 fisher folks from Belong Man-ubal, 8 from Buscalan, 4 from Butbut Proper, 10 from Sumadel I and II, 6 each from Ambato and Basao , 2 each from Tulgao East, Loccong and Luplupa and one each from Bangad Centro and Poblacion have expressed their interest for the said program through attending the orientation last week.
