Updated: Nov 28, 2023

Cagayan, Philippines – The fossilized human remains found in Callao Cave in 2007 are older than actually thought.

The Homo luzonensis was discovered at the Callao Cave in Peñablanca, Cagayan by a team led by Filipino archeologist Dr. Armand Mijares. The group first found a single foot bone in 2007, and discovered additional hand and foot fossils including a femur and teeth during excavations in 2011 and 2015.

These ancient bones and teeth which are said to have lived between 50,000 to 67,000 years ago led to the discovery of previously unknown species related to human, Homo luzonensis.

Recently, researchers Rainer Grun of the National University of Australia and Cris Stringer of Centre for Human Evolution Research of Natural History in London published "Direct dating of human fossils and the ever-changing story of human evolution", showing that the Homo luzonensis found in Callao Cave is much older.

The study which used Uranium-based dating revealed that the fossils are at least 134,000 ± 14 years old.

The specimens, meantime, are kept at the National Museum in Manila.

In 2018, fossils which indicate human existence in the Philippines as far as 700,000 years ago was also discovered in Northern Luzon, in the Province of Kalinga. The remains found in Rizal, Kalinga belonged to a butchered rhinoceros.
