Aguinaldo, Ifugao - Two corn warehouse projects in the province of Ifugao, funded with over P5 million by the Department of Agriculture-Cordillera, were recently completed and were turned over to the beneficiaries in the province.

In its press release, the DA-CAR said that on March 19, the Saranay Community Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Alfonso Lista and the Mapaco-paco Farmers and Fisherfolks Association in Aguinaldo received the new facilities.

According to the agency, high post-harvest losses remain to be among the major challenges faced by the farmers in Ifugao. This is due to the lack of facilities where they can secure their crops to protect them from the unpredictable weather conditions.

Thus, these warehouses, worth P5.213 million, will not only help the farmers avoid crop losses as they now have a place to store their corn produce, but also aid them to maintain the quality of their seeds.

The fund used in the projects, according to the regional agricultural department, came from the 2024 Corn Production Enhancement Project (CPEP) intended to support major corn-producing municipalities across the Cordillera.

CPEP aims to boost corn productivity and national corn sufficiency by providing seeds and fertilizers to farmers to increase their yield.

The towns of Aguinaldo and Alfonso Lista were among the major corn-producing areas in the region, based on the 2024 Corn Production Enhancement Project baseline of the DA. The towns yield was at 3.5 and 3.3 metric tons per hectare, respectively, in said year.

Other top corn-producing areas in the province include the municipalities of Asipulo, Lagawe, and Lamut.
