Man injured in gunfight with Abra police dies in hospital

Bucay, Abra – A member of an armed group who was reportedly injured during a clash with authorities died while being treated in a hospital in Bangued, Abra.

Romnick Balmaceda, a resident of Calumbaya, Dolores, was among five men who are members of a yet-to-be-known armed group who were involved in a gun battle with personnel of the Bucay Municipal Police Station and the 2nd Abra Provincial Mobile Force Company.


The encounter happened at 12:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 09, along the Bucay-Manabo Road at Sitio Nagsalangan, Layugan, Bucay.


Police said they were conducting a mobile patrol in the area when they chanced upon the five armed personalities.

The group started firing their guns at police officers, which led to a gun battle.


Balmaceda sustained gunshot wounds on his leg as a result and was ferried quickly to the Assumpta Family Hospital, where he died.


His companions who were able to flee, in the meantime, are now the subject of a hot pursuit operation by the police.


To recall, Bucay is among the municipalities in Abra recommended to be placed under ‘the red category’ in connection with the village and youth polls this 2023.
