Updated: May 7, 2023

Cagayan, Philippines – A man recently drowned after swimming in the Cagayan river in Lal-lo town while allegedly inebriated, authorities said.

Victim Philip Baloran Garduque, 37 was described by his companions to have a hobby of swimming when intoxicated, the Cagayan Provincial Information Office reported on May 2.

In said report, Leopoldo Colosaga Jr., Lal-lo Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer revealed that due to Garduque’s hobby, his companion didn’t stop him when he went to the water while under the influence of liquor.

His friends, however, were alerted when the victim failed to resurface from the river. This prompted them to call for rescuers.

According to Colosaga, Garduque’s body was already pulled out of the water when they arrived at the place of incident.

The victim was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

Drowning takes around 3,000 lives in the Philippines every year. This is said to be an average of 10 Filipinos a day.
