Investigation of Sierra Madre landslide in San Agustin, Isabela underway

Updated: Jul 4, 2022

Isabela, Philippines – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Region II is currently investigating the circulating image showing a huge landslide at a portion of Sierra Madre in Isabela.

Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines which is almost 500 kilometers in length. It spans from the Province of Cagayan to the Province of Quezon.

The mountain is said to be the backbone of Luzon as it serves as nature’s shield or barrier against typhoon and storm surges in Northern Luzon.

Unfortunately, a landslide on the part of the mountain in San Agustin, Isabela was captured by Ervin Saguitan on May 28, 2022 and posted it on Facebook showing a big area of the mountain eroded.

In response to the viral Facebook post, the DENR Region II and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau created an investigation team who recently started to identify the exact location of the landslide for assessment.

The initial information received by Regional Director Gwendolyn Bambalan relates that a crater at the said portion of the mountain could have possibly caused the landslide after a heavy rain.
