Irrigation canal destroyed by quake in Ipil, Tabuk City now operational

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The irrigation canal in Barangay Ipil, Tabuk City damaged by the powerful 7-magnitude Luzon quake on July 27 is now operational and has resumed irrigation service, according to National Irrigation Administration-Kalinga.


It is one of the most important canals which irrigates 1,150 hectares of rice fields.


The repair works particularly on the water way damage were finished on Friday, August 12 and has been fully-operational since then. The damage cost amounted to P30 Million.


As recalled, the region had an estimated irrigation damage of P241.8 million. Benguet incurred P6.8 million damage cost; Ifugao, P10.9 million damages, Mountain Province with P1.08 million, while Apayao has not reported any damage in their irrigation facility and systems.

To be able to fully restore services of damaged irrigations in the whole region, a budget of P70.33 million for repairs was requested by NIA-CAR.


NIA-CAR added that another P171.5 million is needed ‘to restore the facilities to their original function.’


As mentioned, those that need repairs are damage canals, structures that make up those canals, damaged intakes, pipelines, reservoir tanks, and canal protection.
