Isabela cop gets 'Medalya ng Kadakilaan' for saving passengers in Tuguegarao road crash

Cagayan, Philippines – The heroism of the 38-year-old police officer who saved bus passengers was acknowledged by the Cagayan Valley police force on February 22.

Police Senior Master Sergeant Roland Gacal, a native of Isabela, was conferred ‘Medalya ng Kadakilaan’ at Camp Marcelo A Adduru in Tuguegarao City on Wednesday.

Gacal was given the said award after he salvaged the lives of 9 passengers and other motorists during a road crash in Tuguegarao City on February 8, 2023.

Back then, Gacal took a bus and sat behind the driver. This provided him a view of the driver whose hands were shaking until he completely lost control of the bus and started foaming at the mouth.

The alert cop tried to redirect the bus by grabbing the steering wheel. However, there was no way he could stop the vehicle as he couldn’t find the handbrake and the driver’s foot was still on the accelerator pedal. He then opted to direct the bus straight to a wall to save the passengers and other motorists.

No one was severely harmed in the incident apart from the driver suffering from hypertension and was taken to the hospital.

The Police Regional Office 2 recognized this bravery and courage showed by Gacal through the 'Medalya ng Kadakilaan'.
