Son promises mom to come home as Engineer, tops Sept. board exam

Before taking the September 2023 Agriculture and Biosystems Engineers Licensure Examination(ABELE), a son in Isabela told his mom, he is not coming home without an ‘Engr.’ attached to his name.

With the results released on Sept. 19, Roldan Gumpal Maximo will certainly be returning home to his mother not just as a full-fledged Agricultural Engineer, but also as a board exam topnotcher.

Roldan, an alumnus of the Isabela State University – Echague Campus obtained a rating of 81.70%. The mark made him secure the top 6 spot in the list of 10 outstanding examinees in the recently concluded ABELE.

The 23-year-old told GURU Press Cordillera he was motivated to pass despite the challenges he faced before the board examinations because he wanted to fulfill his words to his mother.

“I really wanted to see her smile while calling me an Engineer and I told her that I am not going home without it before my name,” he narrated.

Exam Preparation

The thought of topping the board exam was merely for self-motivation, Roldan said, as he never considered he could actually do it.

Roldan allotted four months for his review, recalling that the first month was diagnosing his strengths and weaknesses by answering more than a thousand of questions by himself. For the next two months, he enrolled at a review center in Nueva Ecija.

The remaining month, meantime, was spent on a review in Baguio City.

Struggles

His struggle while preparing for the board exam was mainly financial constraints. The night before the exam, however, did not help his body condition for the big day as he couldn’t sleep.

Having only an hour of sleep was not just his concern on the day of the exam as he also had fever, headache, and gout.

Amidst these challenges, Roldan was able to finish the test holding onto his faith and the support of his loved ones.

Advice to board examinees

The September 2023 ABELE top 6 mentioned the keys to passing and even topping a board exam are prayers and self-discipline.

“No. One is prayers, it really works. Ask for wisdom and knowledge from above. Self-discipline, don't divert your attention on things which do consume your time without progress,” he said.

He likewise reminded those who will be taking their exams soon to always remember where they started and draw motivation from it. Lastly, he emphasized the importance of rest and not studying late as the body and brain need sleep in order for them to function well during the review and mostly on the exam proper.
