Jail officer in Kalinga wins 3 gold medals in international Jiu-jitsu games

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Despite getting injured in the middle of a match, Jail Officer Arvin Luma-ang Jose snatched three gold medals during the International Jiu-jitsu games held on January 14-15 in Tarlac City.

Jose, a native of Benguet but currently deployed at Tabuk City District Jail, dominated the GI Blue Adult lightweight and NO-GI Blue adult lightweight and Open weight.

Jose got all these medals while enduring a dislocated finger.

He told GURU Press Cordillera that it was during his match for a gold medal in GI Blue Adult lightweight that he got injured.

“During my battle for gold with a PMA-yer na-dislocate yung pinky finger ko then hinila ko para bumalik,” he recounted.

Jose added that he just wrapped his finger with tape as a support for his matches for NO-GI the next day.

Training at Barracks

While he loves his current job as a jail nurse, martial arts have always been his passion. When asked how he balances his duties as a uniformed personnel and his love for martial arts, he cited time management.

After completing all his tasks during office hours, Jose exercises and practices his technique in the makeshift gym at their barracks. He also trains with his seniors and workmates there.

“I used to just do jogging and other cardio-based exercises but now I was able to practice my technique after office hours … because we made a makeshift mini gym at our barracks, and I get to train with my seniors and workmates,” he shared.

Jose is set to join another competition on February 25, 2023.
