Army seizes high-powered firearms, ammunition following clash with rebels in Apayao

Kabugao, Apayao – Military recovered a high-powered firearm, ammunitions, and subversive documents following a firefight with communist rebels in Barangay Maragat, Kabugao, Apayao Tuesday, December 06, 2022.

With the support of Apayao officials, rebel forces in the province which used to be a stronghold of the Communist Party of the Philippines - New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) in the 1980s and early 1990s are further weakened by the government troops, while other members are returning to the fold of the law.

Governor Elias Bulut Jr. signed on September 30 Executive Order No. 022, series of 2022, granting a P100,000 cash reward to anyone who ‘captures, arrests or kills’ a CTG member ‘in a legitimate military operation,’ and a P1,000,000 reward for the ‘capture, arrest, or death’ of a high-ranking CTG official.

Such effort and cooperation of Apayao stakeholders were acknowledged by the army, saying these ‘contributed to the campaign of the government to end local communist armed conflict wherein the army troops will relentlessly chase the insurgents to achieve peace and progress in the province.’

Recent encounter in Kabugao

On Tuesday, locals tipped off the presence of rebels to the 102nd Infantry Battalion personnel who were then conducting their combat operations in the area, reported the 5th Infantry Division.

The government troops encountered an unidentified number of communist rebels believed to be members of the Komiteng Larangan Guerilla North Abra but the latter group fled.

The troops retrieved war materials at the encounter site.

“With the support of the locals, the troops will hunt down the fleeing communist terrorist as well as pursue them to return to the pillars of the government,” assured the military.
