KAELCO rate to drop this month of September

Updated: Oct 17, 2022

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The Kalinga-Apayao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (KAELCO) announced on Tuesday, September 20 that the overall rate of its member-consumer-owners would go down this month of September 2022.

The Corporate Plan Chief of KAELCO, Leonardo C. Egcatan conveyed during the second energy summit held at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan Hall that consumers will experience a total reduction rate of P0.9703 per kilowatt hour (kWh) in their bills this month.

According to Egcatan, the decrease in power rate in the province is caused by the adjustment of charges of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) which supplies 28% to the cooperative.

He noted the breakdown of the overall decrease which includes: P0.6242 per kWH in generation charge, P0.0981 per kWH in transmission rate, P0.106 per kWH in system loss, and P0.1420 per kWH in value added tax.

Solutions were presented and discussed at the summit to further lower the power rates of KAELCO end-users. One of those recommended is the utilization of renewable resources such as hydroelectric and solar power plants so that the electric cooperative will not be dependent on coal or oil prices.

Currently, among the major power suppliers of KAELCO is Masinloc Power Partners Co. Ltd. (MPPCL) supplying 58% to the cooperative. MPPCL is a subsidiary of San Miguel Corporation which is coal-dominated while WESM is primarily fueled by oil.
