Tabuk City, Kalinga – A possibility of cacao producers in the province to supply cacao beans to a chocolate manufacturing company in the country is seen after an assessment conducted on eight farms from June 30 to July 3, 2022.

This could provide more revenues to cacao farmers in the province and open up opportunities for other farmers planning into cacao farming.

Farms visited for assessment include Daguitan Kan Tangkib Eco Village Farm in Bagumbayan, Em Bangao Farm in Balong, Bulaat Integrated Farm in Dupag, Tabuk, Baluyan Farm in Gobgob, Dalsen Farm in Burayukan, Nambucayan Agri Cooperative in Nambucayan, EJ Integrated Farm in Pasil and Balantoy Balbalan Farm in Balbalan.

The assessment was made by the Department of Science and Technology-Kalinga, Department of Trade and Industry- Kalinga, and CMV TXOKOLAT Company.

The chocolate company is owned by Christian Valdes, which started operating in 2012.

The company said they had catered to restaurants and supplied chocolates in various locations around Metro Manila and in Mactan International Airport in Cebu City.

Along with Valdez, Chef Zandro Dimaculangan from the said chocolate manufacturing company conducted the evaluation to choose possible suppliers of fermented beans for their business.

The activity also sought to increase the quality of cacao beans through the introduction of postharvest techniques and discussion on innovative cacao farming methods.

DOST-Kalinga , in an addendum, said that the engagement shall connect Kalinga cacao farmers to big companies for the establishment of a market linkage.

“This is also a vehicle for the farmers to learn the emerging opportunities in the cacao industry for them to be inspired to produce their own bean to bar chocolates,” DOST-Kalinga further stated.
