Kalinga imposes temporary ban on entry of grazing duck

Kalinga, Philippines – Grazing ducks are not allowed entry into Kalinga for some time to secure safety of the poultry industry in the province against the outbreak of Avian Influenza or Bird flu.


Said EO is effective on August 10, 2022.


Avian Influenza (AI) is highly contagious viral disease caused by any influenza A virus which is affecting several species of food producing birds such as chicken and ducks as well as pet birds and wild birds.


As of June 24, 2022, the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) recorded 286,934 birds that were culled by the government. About 190, 468 were chicken layers, 47, 667 were ducks, 19,900 broiler breeders, 27, 574 quails, 750 native chickens and 575 other birds.


The provinces that have confirmed cases of said virus, BAI disclosed, include Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Tarlac, Bataan, Laguna, Camarines Sur, Sultan Kudarat, Benguet, North Cotabato, South Cotabato, Davao del Sur, Maguindanao and Isabela.


Kalinga PLGU’s Executive Order No. 21, Series of 2022 said it shall not allow grazing ducks or ‘pastol’ from outside Kalinga to come into the province until the outbreak of AI virus is resolved.


The EO, nevertheless, allows movement of grazing ducks or ‘pastol’ (which are already within the borders before the issuance of the EO) within the municipalities of the province. Kalinga PLGU added that it will monitor the status of the said virus.


Inspections of vehicles for live fouls and poultry will be done at all borders


With the authorization of the government, the provincial veterinary office shall conduct the strict implementation of quarantine inspections for all incoming live domestic and wild birds at all the borders of Kalinga.


Additionally, the office shall confiscate said animals and ship them back to the owner or have them delivered back by the transporter. Otherwise, the same shall be seized or be subjected to destruction and disposal by the Implementing agency.


It said the order shall remain in effect unless otherwise revoked.
