'Kalinga is Cordillera's top corn producer in 2023' - PSA

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Having produced 63,660.19 metric tons from January to December 2023, Kalinga ranked first for having the highest contribution to the corn total production of the Cordillera Region last year.

This is 37 percent of the total corn produced in the region during said period, based on the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority-Kalinga on Monday, February 6, 2023.

Next to Kalinga is the province of Ifugao, contributing 30 percent and generating 51,784.01 metric tons. It is followed by Mountain Province with 23,281.09 metric tons, or 14 percent; Apayao with 17,005.45 metric tons, or 10 percent; Abra with 15,575 metric tons, or 9 percent; and Benguet with 465.80 metric tons, or 0.27 percent share.


While the province is tagged as the highest contributor to corn production in the region, PSA said that the total corn production for 2023 is lower than that for 2022.

For yellow corn, production decreased from 63,558 metric tons in 2022 to 63,058.19 metric tons in 2023.

As for white corn, it was said to have increased by 71 metric tons—from 531 metric tons in 2022 to 602 metric tons in 2023.

As to the corn harvested area, it decreased by 1.49 percent in 2023 compared to that of 2022. In 2022, the total corn harvested area was estimated at 15,510 hectares, while in the same period in 2023, it was roughly calculated at 15,745 hectares.

Regarding the corn yield per hectare, it increased by 0.74 percent in 2023, as the corn yield was 4.10 metric tons. In 2022, the corn yield was 4.07.

The main contributor to the corn yield per hectare is white corn, which increased from 2.38 metric tons in 2022 to 2.87 metric tons in 2023. For yellow corn, corn yield also increased by 0.73 percent, or 0.03 metric tons.
