Kalinga LGU joins 3rd quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill

Tabuk City, Kalinga – The local government unit of Kalinga under the leadership of Governor Engr. Ferdinand B. Tubban participated in the’ virtual ceremonial pressing of the button,’ that signaled the conduct of the Third Quarter National Simultaneous Earthquake Drill on September 16, 2021.

Said drill is in compliance with Memorandum No. 08, series of 2021 issued by National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) executive director and Office of Civil Defense administrator Ricardo Jalad aiming “to promote earthquake preparedness and disaster resiliency with the integration of minimum public health standards during the Covid-19 pandemic.”

The drill was initially scheduled on September 9, but was postponed due to typhoons Jolina and Kiko.

Disaster preparedness

Governor Tubban highlighted that the activity contributes to the disaster preparedness of the community to protect themselves and their family, especially in times of sudden earthquakes, landslides, and floods.

"Iti pakimaymaysa tayo iti kakastuy nga activities ket dakkel a banag a mangipakita a nakasagana tayo nu adda ti napigsa a gingined a mapasamak uray nu ayan na man ti ayan tayo… Iti seguridad ken safety ti maysa, ken iti amin a pamilya iti kanayun tayo a papanunuten kin isasaganaan nu man adda iti sakuna. Aramiden tayo amin a kabaelan tayo tapno nasayaat ladta iti salun-at iti tunggal maysa," Tubban stated through Provincial Information Office.

Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Officer Jolanta Baac led the demonstration of the province-wide earthquake drill.

Offices at Kalinga Capitol were led by Provincial Human Resource Management Officer Grace Kidang Flores while “Provincial Cooperative and Enterprise Development Officer Arlene Oyando lead the same at the offices on the lower plateau.”

Duck, Cover, and Hold

During the quake simulation, employees performed the duck, cover, and hold upon hearing the loud siren.

According to NDRRMC, it is important not to panic when an earthquake occurs instead, duck or drop down to the floor. Take cover under a sturdy desk, table, or other furniture that will protect your body, and hold on to your cover so it becomes stable enough to protect yourself from falling debris. Stay in the position until the ground stops shaking, and it is safe to move.

Once the shaking stops, one’s head should be protected while finding a way out of the building.
