Updated: May 29, 2023

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Governor James Edduba raised Kalinga's alert level status from blue to red on Saturday, May 27, anticipating the onslaught of Super Typhoon “Betty.”

As of 5 p.m. on Saturday, the center of the eye of the typhoon was estimated at 1,035 kilometer east of Central Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 185 km/h near the center and gustiness of up to 230 km/h.

Strong winds will be experienced within the areas where Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No.1 is currently in effect – Kalinga, Apayao, Abra (Tineg, Lacub, Lagayan, San Juan, Lagangilang, Licuan-Baay, Malibcong, Danglas, La Paz, Dolores, Tayum, Bucay, Sallapadan, Daguioman, Bucloc, Boliney), the eastern and central portions of Mountain Province (Sadanga, Barlig, Natonin, Paracelis, Bontoc), the eastern and central portions of Ifugao (Mayoyao, Aguinaldo, Alfonso Lista, Banaue, Hingyon, Lagawe, Lamut, Kiangan, Asipulo).

As an offshoot of the discussion during the Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment meeting of the Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management today, Gov. Edduba issued Memorandum Order No. 181, heightening the province’s alert level status to red.

The activation of said status is the highest form of preparation to minimize casualties and damage. It means that duty personnel and alert teams must be on standby 24/7 to respond to any emergency or calamity.

The move is to “ensure maximum, timely, and responsive monitoring, warning, coordination, interoperability, and facilitation of preparedness and response readiness measures in the Province by all member-agencies of the Provincial DRRMC, particularly the surveillance agencies, lead agencies and members of Response Clusters, and all City/Municipal DRRMCS including Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees (BDRRMCs).”

A couple of days ahead of the typhoon, the provincial government and representatives of all concerned agencies convened for necessary measures in mitigating the effect of the looming super typhoon.

The public was advised to secure their properties and remain alert as they keep abreast of weather updates.
