Tabuk City, Kalinga – Stark, a drug sniffing dog in Kalinga and his handler, Police Staff Sergeant Lester Balana were recognized as Top Narcotics Detection Dog and Handler, respectively, in the country.

Stark and Balana received their accolade during the 6th Anniversary of Philippine National Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal and Canine (EOD/K9) Group at Camp Crame in Quezon City held on May 17, 2022.

Balana told Guru Press that the award is being accorded to police service dogs in the country and their handler based on their accomplishments in anti-illegal drugs operation.

Balana said that Stark, a 6-year-old Labrador has been a narcotic detection dog for two years in Kalinga. Among their major and recent accomplishments that landed them the award include the detection of millions worth of marijuana bricks in the province.

From December 23, 2021 to April 28, 2022 alone, around P22,333,920 worth of marijuana bricks have been discovered in four police operations through the aid of Stark.

The “Top Dog" Narcotics Detection Dog and Handler award is the first accolade Stark has ever received in his 2 years as a drug sniffing pooch in Kalinga.
