Kalinga police remind public to take precaution, not to swim and drive when drunk

Tabuk City, Kalinga – As families take their time to bond this Holy Week, the Kalinga police remind the public to take precautions and to keep an eye on their companions particularly when going to rivers.


Every Holy Week in the country, accidents are monitored by the authorities especially drowning. From 2013-2016, the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council recorded a total of 59 drowning incidents, making it the highest number of fatalities during the holy season.

To promote safety and secure the people, the Kalinga police force has already been deployed to places of convergence in the province on April 1.


Don’t swim, drive when drunk


Kalinga Police Information Officer, PCapt. Ruff Manganip mentioned that one of the causes of accidents during Holy Week is intoxication. He cited that while on picnics, people sometimes try to sober themselves up by submerging themselves in the water only to realize they do not know how to swim.


“Ken nu adda da iti picnic area, especially ditoy Chico River nga mapan da agpi-picnic, kitan da launay ta dagiay nabartek, kitan da manen ta haan da nga mapan (aglangoy),” he said.


He added that people should also refrain from driving home when inebriated from a gathering.

Safety first


Manganip reminded those who will be travelling to ensure their house is locked before leaving. This is to prevent burglars from breaking into their homes while they are gone.


He likewise advised them to check their vehicles first before hitting the road to avoid mechanical defects that might lead to accidents.


‘Disiplina kadagiti kakailyan’


Above all, the Kalinga Provincial Officer encouraged the public to practice self-discipline, particularly in consuming alcohol.


“Disiplina lang, disiplina lang kadagiti kakailyan tayo tapnu iwasan tayo ti disgrasya daytoy Semana Santa,” he conveyed.
