Tabuk City, Kalinga – Next to Ifugao, the Province of Kalinga under the leadership of Governor Engr. Ferdinand Tubban, is the second-highest yellow corn contributor in Cordillera for the year 2021, the Regional Department of Agriculture reports during its Agriserbisyo Radio Program on May 19, 2022.

Corn Program Agriculturist II Ronan Soriano of DA-CAR announced that the contribution of the province reached 66,720 metric tons (MT) from January to December 2021. This is 31% share of the 214,867 MT total estimated corn production in the region.

Kalinga further achieved 376% sufficiency level on yellow corn last year.

Based on the submitted Planting Reports by the local government units, the province has a physical corn production area of 12,343 hectares which are fully utilized during the rainy season.

The department cited Tabuk City, Pinukpuk, Tanudan, and Rizal as the major yellow corn-producing municipalities. These likewise produce white corn primarily for home and local consumption.

“With the growing demand for yellow corn being the main ingredient for livestock and poultry feeds, the corn production areas continue to expand even in the steep rolling areas. High yield, however, in these areas is not guaranteed because of the unfavorable slope,” revealed the DA-CAR.

In response, the department has been promoting sustainable ways, such as sustainable corn production in sloping areas (SCoPSA) and intercropping to avoid soil erosion.

To assist the corn farmers in marketing their produce, the department encouraged the farmer’s cooperatives to strengthen and capacitate their groups specifically in consolidating the produce of their farmer-members.

Through consolidation, DA-CAR said, the farmer’s cooperatives may be able to market their produce directly to the feed millers.
