Kalinga temporarily bans live Abra hogs, pork products over African Swine Fever

Tabuk City, Kalinga – With confirmed cases of African Swine Fever in Abra, the Kalinga local government temporarily suspends the entry and buying of live hogs and pork products from Abra.

Recently, over 200 pigs reportedly died in Manabo, Abra. These animals were said to have exhibited symptoms of ASF.

To prevent the spread of the virus in Kalinga, the Office of Governor James Edduba released an Advisory on July 8, banning temporarily the entry and selling of live swine and pork products in the province until the said problem is over.

“In the interest of public health and consistent efforts in preventing the entry of African Swine Fever (ASF) Virus, the provincial government of Kalinga hereby temporarily ban the entry and buying of live hogs, pork, and pork-based products from the province of Abra into the province of Kaling,” the advisory reads.

In a proactive measure, the governor likewise directed the different municipalities and the city to establish border checkpoints to strengthen the monitoring of products from ASF red zone areas.

For the public, the advisory urged them to only buy and consume processed pork meat products from ASF-free places.

“The public is also advised to exercise extreme caution in purchasing and consuming processed pork meat products and to only consume processed pork meat products which are sourced from localities other than the above-mentioned province being suspected to be affected by ASF virus,” the document said.

For concerns and guidance, the public may visit the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian.
