Keeping a tradition alive: Tinglayan LGU held first ever “POSIPOS” for senior citizens

Tinglayan, Kalinga - In a community, elders act as living archives of cultural heritage by maintaining customs, stories, and values that have been preserved over generations, and it is but fitting that they be given the love and care they need.

Through storytelling, they share life experiences and historical insights, thus creating identity and continuity within society. They are often called as the “backbone of our societies," bringing wealth of experiences, knowledge, and wisdom.

For these reasons, the Local Government Unit of Tinglayan in Kalinga, led by Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, organized its first ever "posipos" for all the senior citizens in the municipality on Thursday, October 17, 2024, as a way to recognize their contributions to the community.

The posipos is a cultural practice in Kalinga being conducted to celebrate one's life or to seek healing from “Kabunian,” or the Almighty. Said activity was made part of the LGU’s celebration of the Elderly Week.

Held at the Tinglayan Municipal Gynasium, hundreds of elders from various barangays in the municipality came together to enjoy different activities prepared for them by the LGU.

One of the highlights of the program was the vibrant cultural dances, and the “sissiwit” dance, which brought infectious energy to the elders, was included.

Cash incentives were also provided - senior citizens age 60 were given P500 and those over 70-year-old received P1,000. Said incentives served as a token of appreciation for their years of service  and contributions to their respective  communities.

“Mayat daytoy talaga nga posipos, naawan diay rikrikna-en toy bagi. Agayaman yaman nak launay ken Mayor Sacrament Gumilab ti daytoy nga  nga posipos para kadakami,” said one of the senior citizens when she shared with the Guru Press Cordillera what she feels during the program.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sacrament Gumilab, who graced the event, conveyed his message of appreciation to the elders while highlighting their role in nation-building and advocating for their rights and welfare.

“Aramiden mi amin nga kabaelan mi tapno  mas maited mi ti pangangailangan yo, babaen ti tulong ti namarsuwa,” the mayor added.
