Kennon Road now open but only to residents, essential workers

Baguio City, Philippines – Following the series of discussions and inspections, the Joint Inter-Agency Task Force (JIATF) Kennon announced on Tuesday, May 16, that Kennon Road is now passable but with limited access.

To recall, said road was closed to traffic due to a soil collapse on May 09 along Camp 6, Tuba Benguet, affecting the slope protection project being implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways. The soil collapse bent the steel bars sideways, causing the closure of road’s both lanes.

Kennon Road residents were then allowed to pass through the deter road in Bued River.

On May 15 and 16, DPWH-CAR Regional Director Khadaffy D. Tanggol with Office of Civil Defense – CAR Regional Director Albert A. Mogol, Planning and Design Division Chief Angelita B. Mabitazan, and Baguio City District Engineer Rene F. Zarate conducted a joint inspection along Kennon Road to evaluate the status of the soil collapse, reported the DPWH.

After the assessment, the JIATF released an advisory that the road stretch is now open to residents, effective 5:00 p.m. of Tuesday.

The road was also opened to travelling essential workers going in or out of Baguio City, specifically those working in emergency services, medical, military, police and those in construction works along Kennon Road.

To ensure safety and security, motorists are advised to adhere to traffic and parking rules, and follow speed and load limit as indicated in various signages along the road.

At the same time, road clearing and no parking policies along the national roads shall be strictly facilitated by concerned local government units, in coordination with local police authorities, to avoid traffic and untoward accidents.

Alternate Routes

Other motorists are advised to take the alternate routes via Marcos Highway, Baguio-Bauang (Naguilian) Road and Asin-Nangalisan Road (for light vehicles only).
