La Paz, Abra - Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected officers of the Baguio Correspondents' and Broadcasters Club (BCBC) on February 25, La Paz, Abra Mayor Joseph Niño Bernos appealed to the media for fair and balanced reporting of events in the province, especially during the election period.

The mayor's concern stemmed from how events in the province are usually covered, often focusing on incidents like shootings, while news about the achievements of the LGUs is infrequent.

According to Bernos, every incident of violence in Abra is often immediately reported and politicized, resulting in a negative image of their place. He urged the media to assist in enhancing the province's reputation by delivering fair and unbiased coverage.

He added that negative reports do not only affect the province but the entire Cordillera, despite most of the provinces in the region remaining peaceful and in order.

“Saanlaeng a tiprobinsyatiapektadokadagitidamagtikinaranggasngemkaramantisibubukel a rehiyon no sadinokaadduankadagitiprobinsyaketnatalna,” said Bernos as quoted by the RadyoPilipinas Baguio.

The mayor also took the opportunity to point out that, compared to other provinces, Abra is relatively peaceful when it comes to issues of law and order. With that, he urged again the members of the media to recognize the positive aspects of the province, rather than focusing solely on negative incidents.

Bernos served as guest speaker at the said event, which was conducted at the Benguet Electric Cooperative Office, Baguio City on said date.

The BCBC is among the oldest media clubs in the country, now at 67 years old, according to the Baguio City Public Information Office.
