Tabuk City, Kalinga – A one-storey school building with four classrooms begins construction at Callagan Elementary School in Barangay Guilayon after its groundbreaking ceremony was held on Monday, July 4, 2022.

The groundbreaking ceremony transpired just after the 2nd Graduation and Moving-Up Ceremonies of the said school.

Said school is one of the last mile schools in Tabuk City along with Balatoc Primary School, Tangbay Last Mile School, and Mabato Elementary Last Mile School.

Its operation started in the school year 2020-2021 after approval of its application to DepEd Cordillera.

In a press release, Department of Education – Tabuk City said the school to be erected will be equipped with a common toilet, school furniture, perimeter fence, and a water system.

During the said event, DepEd through Tabuk City Division gave due recognition to the donor of the school lot in the person of Dalmacio Sappa.

The Sappa patriarch received from the agency a plaque of recognition and appreciation.

Leading the ceremony were SDS Irene Angway, ASDS Feliciano Agsaoay, CID Chief Ramonchito Soriano, SGOD Chief Sally Feken, officials from Barangay Guilayon, and representatives from Barangay Nambucayan.

Meantime, the construction of Tangbay Last Mile School is underway, while Mabato Elementary Last Mile School awaits implementation.

What is a Last Mile school?

Last Mile Schools (LMS) have less than four classrooms with less than five teachers, therefore having multi-grade classes. Students in these schools are less than 100 with more than 75% indigenous people learners.

LMSs are makeshift rooms that have not been funded for repairs or are new construction projects in the last four years.

For 2022, DepEd has received a budget of P 1.5B for the construction of 97 schools and 340 classrooms under the Last Mile Schools Program in the country.
