"Learn to coexist with animals" - wildlife conservation group amid snake sightings in Baguio

Baguio City, Philippines – A non-government organization in Baguio City concerned with the conservation of wildlife species is now reminding the public not to attack snakes spotted in their villages amid various snake sightings in Baguio City and Benguet.

“We do not recommend attacking the snake. You can let them be, and they will go away. But we would also like to remind everyone that snakes will always be a part of our lives. We live in a tropical country with some of the richest biodiversity on the planet. We must learn to coexist with animals,” Northern Exotics and Wildlife Troopers (NEWT) said in a statement.

Instead of harming the snakes, the group shared some safety tips on how to deal with these animals when encountering one.

If one is spotted outdoors, the group said the first thing to do is create some noise, like talking, singing, and foot stamping. This will alert the animal to your presence and give them ample time to leave the area.

The group likewise recommends taking alternate routes, cleaning the surroundings, and keeping doors, windows, and possible entrances closed.

NEWT explained that there is a need to clean the surroundings since rodents and other prey animals like to stay in messy areas, attracting snakes.

As for indoor sightings, the group advises the public to provide snakes with a clear line of escape and avoid blocking their path.

If they are in an enclosed area, sealing them is advised until help from concerned authorities comes.

To recall, the latest snake sighting, specifically a cobra, transpired in Beckel, La Trinidad, on Monday, Oct. 09. Though a search was made by the group alongside the personnel of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the cobra was not found.
