Liver transplant needed: Father pleads for help to save his 4-month-old baby

If he had the means, a father in Tabuk City wouldn’t beg for help as he watches his 4-month-old son suffer from a rare disease.

Archy Vhal Lopez of Bulanao, Tabuk City, Kalinga was delighted to welcome their second child, Archy Vhal Jr. in June this year. However, the joy he and his wife felt was overshadowed by sadness and dread in October after being told their 4-month-old Archy Vhal Jr. has Biliary Atresia.

Biliary Atresia is a condition in babies wherein the bile ducts outside and inside the liver are scarred and blocked. This kept the bile from flowing to the intestine, causing it to build up in the liver, resulting in damages that lead to scarring and loss of liver tissue and function.

The disease is rare and only affects 1 in 8,000 to 1 in 18,000 live births in the world.

Lopez told GURU Press Cordillera that his son was confined at the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center from September 27 – October 16 where his condition was confirmed.

Procedure needed

Lopez further narrated that Archy Vhal Jr. was only 2 months old when he was subjected to Kasai operation, a surgery that removes the damaged bile ducts outside the liver. The procedure, he said, was necessary to extend the life of an infant with the said illness.

However, Lopez relayed they were informed there is a sign that the Kasai surgery might have failed and that they have to prepare for their son’s liver transplant.

As of the moment, Archy Vhal Jr. is in a stable condition but suffering from symptoms of pneumonia.

No other resources

Lopez said he and his wife only rely on farming to provide for their daily needs and to support their two kids. With additional medical bills and medicines for their 4-month-old son, their wages are barely enough.

Apart from the medical expenses, there is also the liver transplant they need to prepare as they would need at least P2.5 million just for the procedure.

Lopez admitted it pains him to be this helpless, while he watches his child battle a disease with a tube being attached to his body at the hospital, medicines he has to take, and procedures he has to undergo.

To help Archy Vhal Jr., you may send any amount to Archy Vhal Lopez’s GCash: 0912-210-7352. You can also directly contact Lopez and his wife through their phone numbers, 0912-210-7352 and 09079238346.
