Lubuagan Cadamayan Falls under threat by garbage from visitors

Lubuagan, Kalinga – Cadamayan falls in Lubuagan was littered with garbage recently, prompting the Philippine National Police in the area to conduct a Clean-Up Drive and reduce the impact the rubbish can do to the canals and water flow, especially during this time of rainy season.

According to PNP Lubuagan, in spite of the pandemic and the tourism advisories reminding tourists and visitors that Cadamayan Falls is closed to the public, many still sneak into the place- worst, they leave their trash in the site.

The Cadamayan Falls is one of the tourist areas in Lubuagan frequented for its cool, pristine water and relaxing environment.

In the Clean-Up Drive initiated by the police, they said they gathered sacks of plastic bottles, beer cans, and food wrappers from the entrance up to the water pool. Most of the garbage was found inserted between the water rocks.

NUP Jessica Ameling, Police Community Relations Operator and Crime Registrar said, “Respect for nature, so kadagidiay mapmapan nga bisita ken locals despite restrictions ket dapat kuma met panunuten da diay negative effects ti improper waste disposal ta haan lang nga diay people idiay nga barangay ti ag-suffer kasi connected ti bodies of water tayu.” The Clean-Up Drive was spearheaded by the Lubuagan Municipal Police Station Personnel with Mayor Charisma Anne Dickpus, Tourism Officer Ansherina Odiem, Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo (KKDAT) members, Kaligtasan at Kalikasan (KALIGKASAN) volunteers and the Municipal Administrator. Tourism officer Ansherina Odiem said the attraction is lacking security because it is not yet developed, there are no appointed personnel to safeguard the area. Its distance is far and is located along the road at the boundary of Uma, Lubuagan and Balatoc, Pasil.

“Isu nga what we have done ket agrem-remind nga haan pay lang kuma (nga mabisita) ngem adu ti natatangsit ti ulo na,” Odiem said.

On that same day, the Tourism section and Project Inspectorate team had a re-inspection for its infrastructure. They revisited the area to identify the needs of the Cadamayan Falls.

Cadamayan not yet ready for Ecotourism

It was four years ago when the Cadamayan falls has been recognized and validated as a potential tourist destination in Lubuagan. The Municipality pleaded not to open it to the public as it might lead to tourism traffic and accidents. Tourism officer Ansherina Odiem said, “Ti nature nu ma-mismanage, adda iti pagpasugnudan na, isu iti stand ti LGU.”

Visitations were restricted as the municipality values the ecological health of the area. The barangay was advised not to open it for visitors as observed that Environmental measures and safety issues should be considered first to withstand future environmental issues. She said that a huge amount may be needed for funding of safety facilities, pathways and cottages for Cadamayan falls.

"It is identified naman as one of our tourism sites ngem haan lang pay kuma open kasi haan pay ready diay area in terms of safety facilities for its visitors, and environmental protection measures are not yet in place," she emphasized.
