Lubuagan pushes for immediate implementation of plan to protect its forest

Lubuagan, Kalinga – Having seen the need to further intensify and protect the natural resources, agricultural production areas and ecotourism activities, the Municipal Government of Lubuagan is pushing for the immediate implementation of its Municipal Forest Land Use Plan (FLUP).

This is following the recent signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Municipal Government of Lubuagan headed by Mayor Charisma Anne Dickpus and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Cordillera held on June 28 at the Lubuagan town hall.

The Forest Land Use Plan which was crafted through participatory process intends to provide appropriate management of its natural resources, tenure arrangement and best uses while balancing forest land uses and production activities with forest protection and biodiversity conservation.

Councilor Jan Jericho Odiem, Committee Chairperson on Environment, underscored that the implementation of the Forest Land Use Plan will address the sustainability and development of the forestlands especially the watersheds in the municipality.

“Adu tulong na daytoy ta mai-prepare tayo nu kas-ano tayo a mai-manage ti forest tayo thru munisipyo ti Lubuagan ken ma-identify dagitoy protected areas tayo tapno kuma haan a magaraw ta importante gamin diay watersheds la unay ti protektaran tayo,” he conveyed.

Through the joint effort of DENR and the Municipal Government, the implementation of the FLUP will lead to optimal management of forestlands focusing on the public investments in support of lowland and upland agriculture, tree plantations, and ecotourism.

Meantime, Odiem related that based on the data of DENR, the rate of forest land cover in the municipality has increased from the year 2003 to 2010.

As of now, the municipal government shall wait for the approval of the DENR-CAR on the forwarded copy of the FLUP before it will be implemented.
