Lubuagan, Kalinga― Lubuagan LGU thought it best to plant Alnus tree seedlings around its 1.5 hectare land in Awichon, Barangay Upper Uma. Said land was earlier proposed to be used as Municipal Sanitary Landfill.

The tree planting activity held on June 25 was also done in observance of Arbor Day and in celebration of Environment Month this June as encouragement of planting trees and litter-collecting in the communities.

Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Officer-Designate Ailleen Melody Alya-on conveyed that they organized the tree planting to promote environmental protection and likewise serve as a perimeter fence, following the validation of the proposed sanitary landfill in Awichon held on June 23.

“Diyay ti usaren mi mang-mark diyay site ta diyay ti pimmasa nga na-validate for municipal sanitary landfill. Nalawa diyay mga 10 hectares so yung 1.5 hectares isu ti nai-proposed for sanitary landfill,” she said.

Why Alnus tree seedlings

“… Alnus tree is talaga nga marami na siya aside from that talaga mabubuhay na doon and yung mada-dry na leaves mabalin nga ihalo deretso as compost,” Alya-on added.

Alnus belongs to a species of trees that is beneficial in assisting flood control, water purification in waterlogged soils, and temperature moderation. It can also grow by itself or in mixed-species plantations which the nitrogen-rich leaves falling to the ground enrich the soil.

The said trees are fast-growing and typically grow about 3 feet a year until 20 years of age.

Alya-on related that the efforts of fencing the municipal sanitary landfill might help reduce some problems, adding that it shall soon be established and would cover the collection of residual waste which cannot be processed by the material recovery facility (MRF) like cellophane, Styrofoams, sanitary pads, and diapers.

Alya-on further said that the office has conducted monitoring of the Barangay MRFs to ensure well-managed and consistent operation of the facilities to minimize garbage that will go to the landfill.

“So I encouraged dagiyay barangay officials to see to it nga i-monitor nga operational dagiyay barangay MRFs nga inted ti munisipyo ta haan nga masayang and as we always remind, let us practice waste segregation at source and waste reduction,” she appealed.
