Magalong bares details of Baguio’s El Niño master plan

Updated: Jul 13, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – The Summer Capital is currently formulating a master plan as a response to the ongoing El Niño phenomena that could lead to water shortage in the city.

According to Mayor Benjamin Magalong, the master plan will incorporate short-term, medium-term, and long-term solutions through programs, activities, and projects, based on the report of the Baguio City Public Information Office.

As explained by the mayor, the short-term plan includes encouraging the establishments that are consuming a huge amount of water like hotels and restaurants to install their own rainwater harvesting facilities, with a two-piping system.

It also includes promoting conservation practices among the public.

For the medium-term solution, a rainwater harvesting facility, which is identical to the watershed of Sto. Tomas and Busol will be established in the city’s watershed areas.

As for the long-term solutions, Magalong said there are already proposals for various water projects that could provide enough water supplies to residents in the city.

As told by PAGASA, El Nino could result to below-normal rainfall conditions that may lead to dry spells and droughts in several regions in the country.

These could negatively impact various climate-sensitive industries such as water resources, agriculture, energy, health, and public safety.
