Magalong calls for end of cultural politics on Cordillera month's kick-off

Updated: Jul 4, 2023

Baguio City, Philippines – Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong called on political leaders to put an end to cultural politics in his keynote address during the opening program of the 36th Cordillera Month celebration.

Magalong, during his speech, pointed out that ‘it is about time to abandon cultural tradition of allowing only the elders to decide’.

“It is about time that we have to allow these young leaders, our young people to also participate in decision making. Let us allow them to lead, and take the ring, and take the lead”, the mayor emphasized.

“Amidst the challenges that we are facing now, climate change, corruption, these are the young people, not us elders”, the mayor further conveyed.

He also noted that in pursuing autonomy, political leaders should also be ‘equally passionate’ in pursuing good governance.

With the theme “Celebrating One, Resilient, Diverse, and Inclusive (CORDI) Journey Toward Regional Autonomy”, the kick-off program was held in Baguio City today, July 1, 2023.

During the kick-off, a calendar of activities for the month-long celeb was presented, of which, the main activities will be hosted by Apayao.

Likewise, solidarity messages from various officials in the Cordillera region were heard, followed by the beating of the region’s unity gong.

The most awaited pre-search activity for the Mr. and Ms. Cordillera Autonomy Youth Ambassadors 2023 also serve as one of the highlights of the activity.
