Magangab cave in Balbalan NOW OPEN to public tours

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Tourists can now visit and take selfies in one of the majestic caves of Balbalan - the Magangab Cave after it was formally opened on Tuesday, September 27.


Alongside the celebration of the World Tourism Day, Balbalan LGU gave the green light to boost the tourism industry of the municipality.


The cave, along with Maanus cave, was supposed to be opened in 2020 but it was put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.


Officials and staff of the provincial government, Department of Tourism- Cordillera, representative from the office of the congressman and Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Noel Barrientos representing DENR-CAR were among those who joined the declaration of the opening of the caves.

Features of the Magangab Cave


The cave has two entrances and about 82.7 meters apart, 2.404 meters wide, 3.2 meters tall, and 251 meters above sea level.


One feature of the cave that would excite tourist is the river flowing in it.


Further, the cave, along with four other caves located in Barangay Tawang was classified as Class 2 by the Regional Cave Committee on May 9, 2018.


Class 2 caves are those that have areas or portions that have hazardous conditions and contain sensitive geological, biological, archeological, cultural, historical and biological values or a high-quality ecosystem.


In an announcement, Balbalan Tourism Office told tourists to wait for further announcement on caving and spelunking activities before proceeding to said area.

How to get there?


Barangay Tawang is a nearby barangay where the famous Aciga Boulders are located – Barangay Aciga in Pinukpuk.


To get there, you can ride on public jeepneys heading to the area. It is a three-hour drive from Tabuk City and the caves are about an hour to trek.
