Updated: Sep 25, 2022

Tabuk City, Kalinga – In celebration of World Tourism Day, two caves in Balbalan- the Magangab and Maanus Caves are set to be opened to the public at the end of this month, according to the Kalinga Provincial Tourism Office.

Provincial Tourism Officer Lorraine Alunday-Ngao-i relayed this during a meeting held Wednesday, September 21 at the Provincial Tourism Office, Bulanao, Tabuk City.

Balbalan Tourism Office said the formal opening of the caves will be held this September 27 but reminded that only invited personalities are allowed to join the event. However, the public may start caving activities in the area following a go signal from the office.

As recalled, the opening of said caves, according to the municipal local government unit of Balbalan was supposed to be done in 2020 but was put on hold due to the pandemic.

In an earlier statement, Balbalan Tourism Officer Regine Munda -Cruz said that the opening of the caves in Tawang is a dream come true after witnessing the success of the opening of the Manacota Cave and Underground River of Apayao.

The two caves in Balbalan are among the five caves located in Barangay Tawang classified as Class 2 by the Regional Cave Committee on May 9, 2018.

Class 2 caves are those that have areas or portions that have hazardous conditions and contain sensitive geological, biological, archeological, cultural, historical and biological values or a high-quality ecosystem.

How to get there?

Barangay Tawang is a nearby barangay where the famous Aciga Boulders are located – Barangay Aciga in Pinukpuk.

To get there, you can ride on public jeepneys heading to the area. It is a three-hour drive from Tabuk City and the caves are about an hour to trek.
