Sto. Niño, Cagayan – A 43-year-old man who admitted he became a rebel after leaving his wife in 2009 voluntarily surrendered to Sto. Niño police on Tuesday, September 29, according to Cagayan Police.

The former rebel identified as ‘alyas Ryan’ is a farmer and a resident of Barangay Lubo, Sto. Niño.

His surrender, according to Cagayan police, is a result of the combined efforts of PNP Sto. Niño, 4th Mobile Force Platoon, 1st Provincial Mobile Force Company; 202nd Regional Mobile Force Battalion 2 with the barangay officials of Barangay Cabayo, Sto. Nino, Cagayan.

Based on Ryan’s accounts, he had a huge argument with his wife in 2009, which led to their separation.

Following the incident, he was invited by a friend to attend the anniversary event of the New People’s Army at Sitio Mureg , Barangay Balani in the same town which he accepted.

While at the event, they were shown videos by the leftist group on their successful missions or stories which include the burning of "heavy equipment" and disrupting the detachments of government troops in several places.

He was later convinced to join the group with more or less than thirty newcomers from various municipalities.

He then underwent Individual Combat Training and was trained on how to properly handle firearms before finally becoming an S4 or Logistic of ‘Squad Uno’.

Ryan admitted he was one of the hundreds of Communist Terrorist Group members who occupied the mountains of Barangay Dungan, Rizal. He, along with others, was also tasked to ambush a chief-of-police of said town in the past, which resulted in the killing of that chief and his wife.

Ryan mentioned some internal struggles within the organization. He narrated he experienced having a fight with their squad leader regarding the distribution of supplies.

Due to the fight, Ryan was forced to be reassigned to Baggao, but he refused. He said he asked the communist group for permission to go back to his family and live peacefully. He later surrendered to the police.
