Man with mental disorder kills elderly, hacks 3 others in Balbalan

Balbalan, Kalinga – An 80-year-old man died after he was hacked by a man suffering from a mental disorder in Barangay Balbalasang, Balbalan Monday morning, January 2, 2023.

The suspect identified as Vicente Lao-ing, 33, ran amok around 9:30 a.m. at Sitio Ibbong, hacking everyone that passes along the road, says Kalinga Police Information Officer, PCapt. Ruff Manganip.

The suspect first hacked 80-year-old Stoop Kibayen. The old man tried to fight back using wood but the suspect was stronger and wounded him on his left temple, Manganip relayed.

A citizen named Krisvil Dao-an, 29, tried to pacify the suspect. However, he too was hacked on his right shoulder.

Lao-ing saw two others - Ashley Molang, 30, and Dexter Dagson, 28, and proceeded to injure them with his weapon. Molang was wounded on the face while Dagson suffered lacerations on his head, right buttocks, and left shoulder.

The suspect was only stopped when his father managed to hit him on the head and tied him with the help of a bystander.

The suspect and the victims were brought to the Western Kalinga District Hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, Kibayen was declared dead at around 11:04 a.m. this January 2.
