Tabuk City, Kalinga – Allen Jesse Mangaoang, the Representative of the Lone District of Kalinga, was elected chairperson of Committee on Indigenous Cultural Communities and Indigenous Peoples for another term.

House majority leader Mannix Dalipe announced this on Monday night, August 01, as part of the third batch of committee chairmanship designations in the lower chamber of Congress.

Mangaoang, known as a stern advocate for the rights of the indigenous peoples, chaired the same committee in the 17th and the 18th Congress.

‘Cultural preservation is a must’

Earlier, the congressman underscored that preservation of culture and heritage is a must despite the threat to many IP communities due to aggressive development projects.

This, he said, is for sustainable development and for shaping better the character and values of an IP society.

IP recognition

Among the measures he proposed for IPs include his manifestations for the recognition of the significant role of indigenous women in the national level and as custodians of environment and natural resources.

Mangaoang believes the indigenous women’s traditional knowledge have greatly contributed to safeguarding 80 percent of the world’s remaining biodiversity.

The solon said he is committed to push more legislations and shall ensure that the rights and privileges of the IPs will be duly protected during his time.
