Mayor Magalong to evaluate top cops' courtesy resignation

Baguio City, Philippines — Baguio City mayor and retired police general Benjamin Magalong joins the committee in-charge of scrutinizing records of senior police officials who submitted themselves for assessment and evaluation processes as means of getting rid of narco-cops, the Department of the Interior and Local Government announced recently.

Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. revealed on Friday, January 6, 2023, that Magalong will be part of the five-man committee that will be going over the records of police colonels and generals to determine if any of them has drug ties.

This move is part of the government’s attempt to cleanse the PNP organization and to address the supposed drug problem linking top officials in the PNP.

Earlier last week, Abalos also called on the high-ranking police officials in the country to file their ‘courtesy resignation’ from their posts. The courtesy resignation will automatically be considered as retirement with entitlement benefits should it be accepted by President Ferdinand Marcos following the assessment of the five-man committee.

PNP Chief Rodolfo Azurin Jr. clarified to CNN Philippines that cases would be filed against officials who will be discovered to be involved in the drug trade. However, even with pending cases, they will still be entitled to their benefits and will still receive monthly pensions until they are convicted.

Among those who heeded the call to file their courtesy resignation are the 2 police brigadier generals and 16 police colonels in the Cordillera led by its Police Regional Director, PBGen. Mafelino Bazar.
