Mayor Malannag Jr. of Pasil receives 2 UP medical students deployed for community immersion

Pasil, Kalinga – The local government of Pasil led by Mayor Alfredo “Chao-ig” Malannag Jr. warmly received two medical students from the University of the Philippines-Manila deployed in the municipality for their Community Immersion Program.

Ares Langcato and Jose Kenneth Narag are scholars of Department of Health in coordination with Centers for Health Development and said partner school through Pre-Service Scholarship Program (PSSP).

What is PSSP?

PSSP, according to the department, intends to ensure an adequate supply of service-oriented Human Resources for health who are willing to serve the unserved, underserved, hard to reach, economically underdeveloped, distressed, conflict, and geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) of the country.

The 5th class municipality of Pasil is among the areas with IP communities chosen as a venue for PSSG scholars to serve.

Orientation

In July, a weeklong face-to-face orientation was hosted by DOH in Batangas to acquaint the medical scholars with the nature of the immersion program.

Refresher discussions on Social Determinants of Health in the Community, DOH Public Health Programmes, Universal Health Care Law, Essential Clinical Skills, Updates on the COVID-19 Pandemic Response, and Career Opportunities were further relayed to the scholars.

To enhance their competency, the medical scholars were told to educate, promote, and provide preventive healthcare to the community to avoid diseases, disability, injury, or premature death.

Deployment in Pasil

As part of the PSSP requirements, the incoming third year students Langcato and Narag were assigned in Pasil from August 8 to 19, 2022 for their community immersion program.

During their deployment, the PSSG scholars will be assisting the Rural Health Unit of the municipality in the provision of various health services, says Municipal Administrator.

In addition, the medical scholars are expected to conduct health promotion and advocacy for promoting health programs; attend meetings of Community Leaders (Local Health Board, etc.); assist in the Basic Emergency Obstetrics and Newborn Care (BEMONC) Facility; assist in managing common illnesses; and do first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, when necessary.

Pasil LGU assures continued support

As he welcomes the said grantees, Mayor Malannag Jr. assured his administration’s continued support to the health department and its services.
