Mechanic from Baggao, Cagayan finalist in Automotive Servicing, WorldSkills Competition 2022

Baggao, Cagayan – Aldrin Ulep from Baggao, Cagayan, is among the finalists in Automotive Servicing in the 46th WorldSkills Competition.

WorldSkills Competition is the largest skills competition in the world aimed at providing opportunities for individuals or teams to compete against one another by demonstrating their talent in a particular vocational skill by using tasks derived from real-life and industry-based scenarios.

The 22-year-old gold medalist told Guru Press Cordillera that he prepared for one year for the said competition which was held on October 25-27 at Haus des Kfz-Gewerbes, Dresden, Germany.

During his preparation, he trained his skill in Petromar Car Care in Mitsubishi, Tuguegarao, Car Crew Automotive Service Center in Cavite and TESDA Central in Taguig City.

In the competition, Ulep competed against the representatives of 24 countries in the Automobile Technology skill category.

He admitted he had expected to win a medal due to the training he received. However, he found it challenging to perform in the said event because Germany’s automotive equipment tools were different from those used in the Philippines.

“Ine-expect ko noon na magkaroon ako ng medalya dahil nga po sa mga preperation na ginawa namin kaso nga lang pagdating namin doon nahirapan ako kasi yung mga automotive equipment tools nila ay ibang-iba kompara satin, kaya inisip ko nalang na sana man lang makasabay ako sa kanila, sa awa nga Diyos maski nangapa ako pero na kaya ko rin na mapalapit ang score ko sa kanila at napakalaking experience po yun,” he conveyed.

How Ulep built his automotive skill

Ulep narrated that his interest in repairing motorcycles, cellphones, laptops, and other technological devices started in high school.

He further relayed that he occasionally visited a motor repair shop to observe the technician fix a faulty motorcycle, and he even made an effort to help.

After completing senior high school, he said that his parents couldn't support his education and decided to enroll in the Automotive Servicing course of Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

“Galing ako sa mahirap na pamilya, so kailangan ko mag-isip ng paraan para makapag self-supporting ako, so nag-decide ako na mag-TESDA na lang muna para pagkatapos ko mabilis ako makakuha ng trabaho then habang nagtatrabaho ako itutuloy ko ang aking pag-aaral,” he said.

Ulep always put his best into executing the skill he learned from his mentor, but he never expected to be selected to compete in the provincial skills competition.

He was subsequently sent to the regional competition up to the Philippine National Skills Competition and won a gold medal, making him the country’s representative at the WorldSkills Competition.

As a message to other aspiring youth that are developing their skills, Ulep said, “Magpursigi at paghusayan pa lalo, kung nakakaranas man ng kamalian that’s the way for us to improve what we have now, wag niyong hayaan na ang kabiguan ang siyang magpapabagsak sa inyo, go with the flow to God’s will”.
