Meet Kalinga’s ‘Kangaroo dog’

Updated: Jun 21, 2021

Not all dogs are born with four legs; Kol is different. He was born with only two.

Who would have thought that disability could turn into a force behind courage to survive and give inspiration? Not all can see the silver lining in the dark clouds when they are in a situation that could be likened to an epitome of bad luck.

This two-legged Aspin dog has survived and beaten the odds, living a normal life with his happy and active personality. His life could have been different were it not for his human parent.

What’s behind the name Kol?

Sherri May Dalanao Dadufalza said her dog was named Kol from the word ‘Pukol’ by her mum because the Aspin was born without his two front legs. She said that Kol has two other siblings but they both have complete body parts.

She recalled they thought the pooch might not be able to survive because of his condition. But as Kol grew up, he learned to walk with his two legs using his chest as support. This made him look like a kangaroo.

“Kasla kangaroo ngay, diay chest na kasla nga diay iti pinaka-saka na tapos kasla aglag-lagtu, kasla kangaroo talaga iti style na nu magna,” she described.

This June, when Kol was finally weaned by his mother, Sherri took him and brought him home to Agbannawag.

Love at first sight

Sherri admitted she was not a dog person, but she got three dogs for her children who love them. However, with Kol, she described her relationship with the puppy as love at first sight.

“Siyak ket haan nak met a talaga mahilig iti as-aso ngem idi panagkitak pay lang ket, 'ay dapat daytoy mabiyag.' Isunga kunak kenni mamak, alak lattan daytoy ta kailangan na a mabiyag, padakkelek,” she said.

Taking care of dogs could be costly due to regular check-ups, vaccines, medicines and others. But this pet owner said people don’t really count the money spent when it is for the one they love. She added that Kol just visited the AR veterinary this June 14 to get his antiparasitic medications. According to Dr. Stephen Ballog, Kol has a high possibility of survival.

Sherri underscored the importance of showing her love to her Kangaroo Puppy the same with humans. She said no matter what dogs look like, if you own them you should accept, love, and treat them just like any other normal dog.
