Miss Universe PH soon to get inked by Apo Whang-od

Tabuk City, Kalinga – Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Marquez Dee plans to get a tattoo from legendary ‘mambabatok’ Apo Whang-od, the inspiration behind her iconic evening gown in the Miss Universe 2023.

It could be recalled that Dee, during the evening gown segment of the 72nd edition of Miss Universe in November, sported a sheer nude dress adorned with black jewels with intricate patterns.  These patterns were the hourglass or the rice mortar, the fern, and the snakeskin.

The dress was made passionately as a tribute to Apo Whang-od.

In her homecoming press conference, the Miss Universe Top 10 finisher revealed she was supposed to fly and see Whang-od before the competition in El Salvador last November 19, but it was cancelled due to a typhoon.

Wanting to meet the 106-year-old tattoo artist, she and fashion designer Mark Bumgarner will be going to Kalinga to visit Whang-od soon.  

“I’m planning to go very, very soon, maybe in the next few weeks. I really want to thank her for being such an amazing inspiration for all of us. Of course, she has shown so much for cultural preservation,” she conveyed.

Asked what tattoo will she get from the artist, Dee said she will leave the design up to Whang-od.
